2. Complete our WOTT induction, and tools competencies
To maintain our high level of health and safety standards, we require all new members to go through our onboarding process before using the Workshop.
Our 30-minute induction covers Workshop usage, guidelines, and health and safety protocols. These inductions run on Friday and Saturday mornings from 8.30-9 am. No need to book, just turn up. This also includes 15-minute complementary sessions with us to discuss projects and a ‘Tool Competencies’ session.
Tool Competencies
Our ‘Tool Competencies’ sessions allow us to assess and confirm each member’s ability to work with the tools, materials and hardware you wish to use. These assessments must be booked in with our team before commencing a new project.
There are several different ways for you to acquire or demonstrate your competencies, depending on where you are at:
Situation #1: You have a project in mind, you have the tool skills, and we know you have the tool skills….because you’ve taken one of our courses!
If you have completed any of our Courses, we will sign you off as competent under supervision for the tools and machinery covered under that course. This usually takes 20 minutes and will be done during your induction session. Once this has been done, you are ready to go! Our project space is open 9 am-5 pm, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. No need to book, just check in with our team when you arrive.
Situation #2: You have a project in mind, you have the tool skills, but we don’t know you have the tool skills.
If you have experience in certain tool use but have not undertaken an appropriate course with us, you can use the complementary 15-minute post induction time to demonstrate your competence with us- if there are multiple tools to go through, and will take longer than 15 minutes, please book in a 1-on-1 with us to get signed off on those tools.
Situation #3: You have a project in mind, but you have no experience with the tools and equipment you wish to use.
Here you have 2 options!
1. Enrol in one of our courses to gain the knowledge and/or experience needed, and that covers the tools and equipment you wish to use.
2. Book a 1-on-1 session.
If the tools or equipment you wish to use are not covered in any of our courses, or if you want a more intensive training session, you can book a 1-on-1 session with us. We will take you through learning/practising on the tools and equipment… and can even help plan and work on your project alongside you to build your confidence.
Situation #4: If you do not have a personal project in mind to use the project space yet…if you want to learn at your own pace…if you want to learn skills or do your own projects in a group or workshop setting…
Join a club!
Club days target specific projects that you might be interested in- there’ll be demonstrations, group projects and the added benefit of being alongside other members, giving each other support. Each club runs monthly, and you can join one, two, or all of them!
Competency Levels
We have 2 levels of competency to ensure your safety and confidence is not compromised…or anyone else’s!
- LEVEL 1: Competent under supervision:
This is like having your ‘P’ plates for tools!
You have been shown how to use the tool or machine, but you still need to practise the skills regularly to build the confidence to use them under all conditions. - LEVEL 2: Competent unsupervised:
CONGRATULATIONS! You now have your full licence for those tools and equipment you have been practising with.
PLEASE NOTE!:
You will never be left unsupervised in the project space- there will always be a skilled experienced supervisor in the project space during opening hours. This is how we support you to feel safe and confident as you acquire skills!
Remember, there is no time frame or pressure on your learning journey. Everyone learns differently and grows at their own pace.
So if you are still feeling unsure or not confident in using these tools, just ask for help, or a quick refresher, or simply someone to stand there for support. That’s what our friendly staff are there for!
3. Start making!
